Dance Styling

Dance styling is a very broad term that can mean many different things. There are a lot of aspects to dancing. There are the correct steps, body positioning, head positioning, dance frame, balance, timing, body movements, lead and finally grace. You can analyze each step for each of these factors. Virginia Coker talks about her balance system. She says, "I'm a tree ",  meaning she is perfectly balanced on each step. A dancer can look at each step in a series of steps and carefully analyze the balance of each step individually and separately. The same can be done for body positioning. Of course, the wall mirror becomes essential in this effort. Interestingly, as you change your body position, you must again reanalyze the resulting balance of the position so that you will remain stable.

Why some men have a fantastic lead and others don't, simply has to do with clearly communicating to the woman with their bodies. The woman can not do what she doesn't know to do. The man must know what he is doing beforehand and be definite in his movements. With an excellent dance frame, these definite body movements are communicated well. When things go wrong, it's usually the fault of the man! Dancing with many different partners helps develop this skill in leading well.

(04/11/10) Every so often you have an epiphony (a sudden understanding of the essential nature of something). In this case, it was facilitated by Wayne Abbey. You do not dance square shoulder to shoulder. The man angles his shoulders, however, the angling does not come from twisting the shoulders and arms, it comes from the turning of the hips and ultimately primarily from bending one of the knees.
