Hello! This is my online dancing journal. It's written as a way to keep up with my dancing progress and as a way for my wife Linda and myself to share with others our love of dancing. We also enjoy sharing our experiences about the Atlanta dance scene. I met my wife, Linda, when I was in dental school at Emory but what is really significant is that we met dancing! Linda has always loved dancing but frankly, I didn't. We've been married over thirty years and with our three children grown up and out of the house, it was time to renew our relationship and fall back in love. With this in mind, I agreed to take a weekly lesson at the Knights of Columbus Hall with the Atlanta Ballroom Dance Club. They are really nice people and we enjoyed the lessons. After about six months of one weekly one hour group lesson (about $10 per lesson), we tried dancing at Daza Dance Ballroom Academy in Johns Creek (Alpharetta). Since then we've made Daza our primary Atlanta dancing home. In January 2009 we took one group lesson (Latin Club) and the next month (February 2009) we joined Daza's unlimited program (unlimited group lessons for $199.00 per month). This is a great deal but increased in cost recently!
As I improved and began to "get it", I started to enjoy ballroom dance. A year ago (2008) I literally had two left feet. I would watch a dance instructor teach a step and I would never really understand what I was doing. I just stumbled through the lessons knowing I looked like an idiot. The worse feeling was when I danced with a woman who knew what she was doing and I could see the frustration on her face. Fortunately, most of the embarassment of those bad old days has gone.
Some of my website will be devoted to reviewing my dance philosophy and also to share some thoughts related to dance. I will reveal some secrets to getting a man to dance with you, some of my ideas about learning dance and some thoughts about good dance manners. Linda and I take weekly private dance lessons with Wayne Abbey.
January 2011 marks the second anniversary dancing at DAZA Dance. However, February marks the two year anniversary of when I began seriously taking dance classes. Unfortunately, I sustained my first dance related injury (left knee's medial meniscus tore) doing latin drills at DAZA. My hope is to rehabilitate my knee so I can continue to dance with my wife and friends. Fortunately, I have been able to do walking dances that do not rotate the knee (two step and west coast).
January 2012! Third year dancing. Linda and I were appointed to the Atlanta Ballroom Dance Club Board of Directors. Three months ago I suffered a concussion after being hooked on the back of my feet while doing a Vienesse Waltz at 200 beats per minute. I am recovering slowly but surely.
Linda and I now can do many different dances including Foxtrot, Waltz, Tango, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Two Step, Nightclub Two, Rumba, Cha Cha, Bachata, Salsa, Merenge, Samba, Mambo, Bolero, Quickstep, Jive, Viennese Waltz, Argentine Tango, International Foxtrot , International Waltz, Polka, Paso Doble and more. Is this "crazy" or what?!
By the way, did I mention I was an Atlanta dentist?
